Kai is a naturally long person. Tall, lanky, (but muscled more than the average bear) Kai's had a few years now to get used to being a bigger guy, and he's started to almost slink when he moves. He can move silently on concrete, but grass tends to floor him (how can you keep silent surrounded by tiny blades of potential noise?) His mood is generally sunny, and it'll be a strange day when you find him anything less than amicable.
Of all the other things that don't change, though, his eyes are the most prominent. Fierce and steel-blue, they're not to be trifled with... Well, when he's mad at any rate. Kai is seldom mad or even irritable, provided no-one tries to tell him what to do. Not coming from a particularly tall or sun-exposed district means he's probably almost at his full adult height, and he'll always be pale and burn easily. It's a mercy, really, that he spends so much time inside, manufacturing the very firearms that are always turned on them. The Peacekeepers are not known for their kindness here, and Kai still has a scar or two on his legs from the sharpened rifle barrels. He doesn't know how lucky he is that a few rough Peacekeepers are the worst of his concerns. He's not suffered an empty stomach a single day in his life, and it shows in his tall stature and thick muscles. Although cold in colour, his eyes are bright and his skin healthy. He's never even heard of the conditions in District 12- why should he have? He'd probably be a bit less content with his lot then.

If (for some unusual reason) you were transferred to District 3, it's common knowledge that Kai would probably the first to congratulate you on your good fortune, ask your name and volunteer to show you around. If there's one thing that constantly fights with his passion for programming, it's his love of making new friends. Anything new and exciting show up; a new machine or protocol? Kai will put his head in the horse's mouth before anyone else, give his honest opinion and (if it really fascinates him) work on making it better. He's made friends with everyone he can in the area -mostly those his age. Exchanging assembly methods or handling techniques, he is fiercely loyal to everyone, even those who don't really like him- like his brother before him, he's stuck in the belief that anyone can be friends with anyone if they just open up a little. As long as it won't cost him his other friends or his computer programming, he'll stand up and take the blame for anyone who can't handle it themselves, and he defends the underdog to the bitter end. It's why there's no love lost between himself and the Peacekeepers. They each get in the other's way.
It's also pretty hard to get on Kai's bad side. He's a stickler for seeing the other side, and when someone does cause him to lose his head, being alone for a while will remind him of his values, and he'll apologise. Only once has he apologised to the Peacekeepers of his own free will - l believe the exact words were: "Sorry for getting impaled on your long, hard stick." Not clever, but his friends around the corner fell about in silent hysterics at the Peacekeeper's face.
Oddly for someone who always tries to see the other side, Kai harbours a dislike of anyone from District Two. Not only do they supply most of the Peacekeepers that he so dislikes, they're also District Three's only competition for firearms manufacture, and the Capitol knows it. His District can be easily manipulated by even the slightest hint of the Capitol relying more on their career district, and so uprisings have been minimal over the years... Well, quite apart from Ferra. She's just another of the girls he'd like to befriend, but the little firecracker bit his head off whenever he tried.
One thing that he knows will always be there for him, though-- one person he can switch around as much as he likes-- is his AI, ACE-- Artificial Conciousness Experiment. She doesn't have a voice of her own yet (it's not like he can explain to anyone why he wants recordings of them saying pretty much everything), but he's developing a personality for her, and whenever he's got a spare moment, he's always working on her. Lines of code, preparing her for every scenario, giving her curved answers to inspire her user to ask just the right kind of question... She fascinates him in a way that no human ever has. Obviously she'll never be truly concious or sentient, but providing that illusion is a hobby that's slightly more than what the word suggests. To make sure she's never discovered, he takes her off the home computer whenever he goes out and stores her and all her memory on a large, palm-sized flashdrive, purchased at the cost of a tesserae from one of the computer-line workers. It was a risk he was willing to take-- after all, he only has seven tesserae... Surely he's got nothing to be worried about?

They lifted the heavier ones like weights so that one day they'd be able to keep them steady, fired the little handguns to learn how to breathe, practised assembling and dessembling them under the desk during class. Although Kai might be passionate about his AI, he's still good with the weapons that make his district so important to the Capitol. | [bg=111111][cs=2]FULL HISTORY »
Kai, youngest son of two, was born on the floor of the weapons-assembly block floor, eighteen years ago. His mother often jokes that that's the only time he's ever been early in his life-- a heavy sleeper and reluctant morning person means he's been late to his fair share of classes when she's not there to wake him. His older brother at first took on the role of tormentor for his younger brother-- a time that Kai has either repressed or simply forgot. But Mollia, a firm woman with both her boys, soon set him straight. "No violence." Iaron would later recite this phrase with glee to his brother as the most hilarious thing their mother had ever said. Conveniently, he's unaware the fact that this telling-off was really what set him up as the role-model that his brother so adored. Iaron was the kid who passed notes, studied hard but not so hard that he couldn't play, got the mediocre grades because he'd rather spend time with his friends, and preferred any form of work other than what was given him.
Kai was a little more down-to-earth than his brother. He was a complete mama's boy, so while Iaron was getting taught how to woo the ladies by his father, Kai was studying hard with his mother close by. And that, really, has been his life so far. He learned compassion and keeping his mouth shut from the actions of his mother, learned the importance of self-sacrifice and friendship from his brother, and all these things have shaped who he is today. When his views are challenged, he still gets fidgety and quiet, just like the fifteen-year-old boy who cried out 'Down with the Capitol!' during his father's work shift and was promptly beaten with a rifle barrel for it.
Throughout his life, he hasn't looked much further than tomorrow and does his best to, in the infamous words of Dory, 'just keep swimming'. ACE is, in many ways, his closest friend-- she doesn't judge, and when she does he simply remembers the parameters he assigned that brought on that response and chuckles a little to himself. But it's not being able to do that with humans that he appreciates, too. They're much harder nuts to crack, and he doesn't mind as long as they're not trying to crack him.
All he has to do is survive past the games, and then he can finally (finally!) start thinking about having a future of his own, with a girl of his own. As long as she doesn't mind being occasionally upstaged by ACE, of course.
